Well, our yesterday was not quite what I had in mind but we made a great day and learning experience out of it anyway. K woke up to a flat on her car so we got in ours to get the kids and take her to school. We then came home, ate breakfast and got started on our bookwork. The kids did everything except math when we left to go fix the flat. Ended up that J had two students who had a flat on their car as well so we headed to the school first to help change that one. While the kids waited in the car they visited and played. Cat read from a poem book for quite a while. They also listened to Science Verse on the CD player. We finally got to change the tire on Kers car and took it to her at work. One the way home, Ka made up a game: all the other kids would close their eyes and he would say 'Is there a bus infront of us?" the kids would say "yes or no" the questions went on and on.. it was great.. the kids were very entertained. The kids asked if they had to do their math when the get home and I said.. lets just do it here.. so the math fact questions started.. needless to say.. we got our math in too!
When we got home we ate ice cream! A real treat at my house! I asked the kids what they learned today and here is what they said:
Sometimes accidents happen (Ka)
I learned that if you are going to change a tire on a car you need to make sure you have the right jack" (Ka)
We practiced patience (Cat)
We learned to help others.
We learned that some things are more important sometimes than school and work. (like helping others)
We learned how to play games in the car and have fun! (Ka)
We learned that you put water on the outside of a tire so you can tell if the air is still leaking out. (Ka and Cat)
You see.. the wonderful thing about homeschooling is you have time to help others and learn from real life situations. The kids could have written me a story about someone who has a flat tire, and what happened with them, but that cannot compair to the real life experience of being there yourself!
The other thing that is great about homeschooling is when you go to the library at 9 in the morning you are the only ones in the childrens section. Today.. each child got to play on the computer and pick as many books as they wanted. I did turn in 120 items or so and only left with 90.. so we decreased out shelf a little. Some people would think.. "you really READ all those books!" .. well the answer is YES! its amazing what you can find time for when you dont sit and play video games, or watch TV all day!
After our trip to the library (2 hours) we come home and ate lunch and then went to the park. Its been a great day so far! And we have our books ready for next week!
