last weeks update

OH.. the joys of homeschooling.

Its been a while since I have posted heres what we have been up to:

The kids decided this week to make obstacle courses in the backyard. The courses involved the monkey bars, slides, waterhose, wheel barrows and amost anything else they could find to use. They had a great time.

History we are learning about Alexander the Great. I asked the kids to tell me what they rememberd about him and this is what I got:
He was King of the world they knew
He untied a knot by cutting
It was called the Gordian Knot
His fathers name was Phillip
There was a horse his daddy liked but no one could ride it. Alexander figured out the horse was afraid of its shadow and got on the horse and rode it so that the horse could not see his shadow. Alexander was 12.
Alexander gave up fighting in India
He built cities all over the lands he conquered.
One city was named Alexandria.
They build a lighthouse there. It was called Pharos. They have found some pieces of it in the water.
(not bad for 4-9 year olds huh!)..

In math Cat and Kaleb are in multi. and the book has introduced pints/quarts. I got out my pint mason jars and my quart mason jar and had them figure out which was which and how many pints equal a quart. The book has introduced this along with multipication by 2s. (this is mostly review for them)

A funny thing happened a few days ago with our science. We are learning about Mercury. This day we had learned about craters and asteroids etc hitting its surface. One of the experiments is to use flour and small rocks to make your own craters. The kids had a great time.. .....so great infact Catherine came running in from outside to ask if they could add water to the flour. She was covered head to toe with flour. Needless to say it turned into a flour fight. I did get onto the kids cause of the HUGE mess it made but have since decided that they ended up learning all sorts of things about Mercury during that fight. Like: how hard you have to throw a handfuls of Mercury dust for it to get to the person you are throwing it on, that Mercury would be a powdery place to live, that the craters wont last for ever, and that a small amount of flour (or surface of Mercury) can make a big mess :).

Well.. I have popcorn waiting to be handed out to the kids. They are currently watching a NASA kids program and just relaxing. I will post pictures later.

Happy Homeschooling!
