Our Day

The kids did their bookwork and then we got to do Bible, History, and Greek Root.

Our scripture for the week:
"Do to others as you would have them do to you." Matt 7:12
Our Greek word for the week:
Metron: meaning to measure/ we thought of words like Thermometer (heat measure), and Diameter. (to measure across)

In History we studied the story of the Golden Apple from Ancient Greece. Here a short version I got off the internet: In another Greek myth, Eris, the Goddess of Discord, was enraged because she had not been invited to the wedding of a fellow god and goddess. She tossed among the guests a golden apple with the inscription, "For the fairest." Three goddesses felt they were worthy. In order to put an end to the squabbling, Paris, a mortal, was called upon to judge the fairest. He chose Aphrodite. Hera and Athena, the rejected goddesses, were furious and caused great devastation to Paris and his family. According to this legend, the clamor eventually led to the Trojan War.
We also discussed polytheism and monotheism. How Polytheism (the belief in many gods was wrong and how Monotheism, the belief in God was correct. We also talked about how the Greeks had many gods they believed in and that it wasnt right. I also talked about how it is ok for us to learn about these people and what they believed and related it to how we know about Superman and spiderman but we dont believe they are real.
While I read the story and we discussed the stuff above the kids did coloring pages of the three Greek goddesses and then we labeled which was which.
They way this history program works is that by the time the kids are out of high school they will have studied ancient history three times, each time getting more and more in depth. I didn't even know anything about myths until highschool and then all I remember was watching the movie Clash of the Titans. :)

While eating lunch the kids listened to Bible Heros Math Tape. If you are interested you can find this CD on this website: http://www.singnlearn.org

I also did reading with Tay, Jo and Nate. They practiced reading their sight words.

Tomorrow.. we get to do Science again.. we are going to melt chocolate using a magnifying glass and the sun! .. then we get to eat it!
