Cat's Science Oral Report, Bible, Great finds at the Library

Science today:
Here is Catherines explanation or oral recitation of what we learned in science today. She sat on the floor beside me and I asked her what she learned in science today and these are her words:
"Today in science we learned that the sun is really all the colors of the rainbow. But it only appears on earth yellow or orange because the light goes through the earths atmosphere. The atmosphere is also why the sky is blue. The sun is twenty times hotter that the hottest oven on earth. We also learned that white reflects light and black absorbs it, The reason black is black is because all the colors of the light from the sun go into the black and no colors are reflected. The reason white is white is because it reflects all the colors of the rainbow from the suns light. The yellows waves of light have bumps that are longer than the blue waves of light. You shouldn't look at the sun too long because it can blind you. Here is how it blinds you: The light goes into the center of your eye and it melts a hole on the back of your eye."

For our science activity today we used Speck, (Kam, Tay, and Kal's dog) to learn how the black on Specks head was hotter than the white part on her back. This was showing how the black fur was absorbing the light energy and the white was reflecting it. We also did this with a black and white piece of paper.. but the kids liked the Speck experiment better :)

Our Bible verse for the week:
"Even a child is known by his doings," Proverbs 20:11a
I also read Chapter Two of Genesis from the KJV of the Bible while the kids laid down and closed their eyes.

This morning the kids enjoyed playing outside with Speck and Trixy. Kam, Nate and Tay played Trouble, Twister, and with the tangram puzzles.

We listened to songs from Burl Ives Little White Duck CD.. If you have never listened to this CD it is great. Kam's favorite song on that CD is the lollipop Tree. We also listened to Wee Sing America.

Today was our first day of Spanish. The University House Channel has a satellite Spanish program for elementary grade children. Today was a short pre-test to see if we knew certain words. The kids watched this while eating lunch sitting on the twister mate in the living room.

Some books I am excited I found at the library tonight:

(North America) .. its a great little pocket size book with color photos in the middle(over 300 pages) of all the different types of clouds, tornadoes and other winds, snowstorms and ice storms, floods, droughts and related events, obstructions of view, (like fog.. did you know there are different names for different kinds of fog? uhg.. Amazing.. , or dust, pollution.. OH.. I am going to have to find this on to buy.. and that is a huge statement coming from someone who says "LIBRARY!!!!" to friends and relatives when they are wanting to PURCHASE a book!
