Life and Our Homeschool

One of the things I love about homeschooling is that when life happens we can be flexible. I have not been feeling all that great for the last week or so and I might just break down and go to the doctor in a few days. All this to say that we have definitely not stuck to our schedule the last few weeks.
The kids have done Math, Handwriting and Reading every day. As far as the rest of it.. I have put it on hold until next week. We have been doing some major spring cleaning and the kids have been helping in a huge way. I had gotten so far behind on laundry that DH and I decided we would pay the kids if they wanted to get it caught up for me. So .. for the last four days the kids have been washing, drying, loading, and folding and putting away laundry. They all have made comments on how the think it is fun. (Laundry fun? who knew?) .. We have also be sorting and organizing closets, bedrooms, and stuff. I consider all of this a learning opportunity for the kids and realize just because they havent written a paper about it or done a worksheet on it.. they are still learning.
One of the neatest things lately is they have really gotten into the encyclopedia sets. Just this morning Cat was looking up the state of Colorado. She was wanting to find out its state tree etc. I also caught my youngest singing memory songs at breakfast this morning and my middle son trying to do a flip on the rings outside. All of these things I consider learning.
I am constantly amazed at the kids interest in learning, reading and finding answers to their questions. I am convinced that the most important thing I can teach my kids is to LOVE learning.
I could write more about all this interests led learning (including the archery lessons that the kids got from their Paw Paw) but I don't have time right now :)
We are looking forward to PE tomorrow and then the park with friends. Today is DHs birthday so the kids will make a homemade cake for him and help decorate and clean house for family party tonight :)

On a side note:
I have checked out from the library Charlotte Masons Original Homeschooling Series (6 vol set) and cant wait to read it. I have looked at it a little bit and so far I love what she has to say.

ALSO.. I am considering giving away a book .. check back soon to sign up for the give away. :)

I came across your blog via the Math U See blog. It was such a blessing to see your children enthusiastic about their math books! I showed it to my K daughter who was inspired by their enthusiasm.

I'm new to home schooling and loved reading your blog and love for teaching your children. May I ask how you inspire your children to love learning? My daughter isn't quite enthusiastic about home school. There could be quite a lot of factors, one of which I pulled her out of school to home school and the fact that it may be a bit structured. I'm trying to loosen up a bit. Any thoughts is much appreciated!

I have been reading the Charlotte Mason books as well. They are wonderful! Ambelside Online has the whole Charlotte Mason style curriculum for free plus tons of links and info. I would highly suggest reading A Charlotte Mason Companion and also A Charlotte Mason Education. I have both and they have completely changed my view of homeschooling and our method. You are welcome to borrow them from me if you like. I live in your area. If you would like you may email me at TiMandi2@aol.com.
