Today was Safety City day. Catherine and Kaleb had a GREAT time. To put it in their own words, "That was so much FUN!.. I want to go back!"
Safety City is a part of our local police dept. It is a miniature "town" with small (what I would call play house) model churches, gas stations, McDonalds, etc. It also comes complete with traffic lights, side walks, a bridge and a fish pond. The Police officer (who is actually a homeschool dad) gives about a hour lesson on traffic, pedestrian and bike safety. Then the kids get to put what they learned in to practice. Every child got to drive a mini car, ride a bike, and walk all around safety city. It was GREAT. (so sad I forgot my camera.. so no pictures)
I am excited about he possibility of being "virtual" pen pals with Jessicas class in Taiwan. After last nights experience with talking on the computer with her it is even more exciting. Jessica decided that we could teach the kids in her school a lesson in accent. (Texas Accent to be exact) :) My kids have learned so much from Jessica and Joels travels and cant wait to learn more!
Yesterday was Presidents Day.. I found a great site (which I will list at the bottom of this post), which had some pictures of President Bush, the First Lady and the First Puppies. The kids wrote letters to President Bush, (which I will photo and post later), They also built log cabins while we talked about Lincoln, and listened quietly as I read a story of the making of the constitution. We took a break from reading and at a Birthday cake and sang happy birthday to Lincoln and Washington (whose birthdays are both in Feb). It was one of the great homeschooling days!
Here is my favorite quote from the book I read to the kids:
Taken from;
"Ben Franklin's Reminder" from the Children's Book of Faith edited by William J. Bennett
"I have lived a long time," he went on "and the longer I live, the more proof I see of this truth: God governs in the affairs of men. If a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, can an empire rise without his aid? Without God's help we will do no better than those who built the Tower of Babel. We will end up divided by our own selfishness, and our work will come to nothing."
The story goes on to say that over the course of the next few days the men were less argumentative and started working more quickly towards what we now have as the Constitution.
If you have not gotten and chance to read the "Children's Book of Faith". Check it out at your library, you wont be disappointed.
