Third Day of School

Today was fun. As the children are down for rest time I thought I would share a few of the things we did today. I do have pics but will post those in a day or so.

The kids played in the front yard for a bit first thing this morning, playing basketball, riding bikes, skooter and blowing bubbles. After that we got ready and headed over to Grandmas house, which is a short walk away, and picked peaches.

Grandma showed us which trees we could pick from and why the ones that looked ready to pick really weren't. We then all went inside to see all the peaches she had already picked and even ones she has "put up" in the freezer. Before we left we read in the world book about how peaches came to America. Most plant scientists think they originated in China, spread throughout Europe by the Roman Empire and then brought to America by Spain and then with the Pilgrims. We also learned California is the nations largest producers of peaches and that only Apples and Pears out number it in amount sold.
When we got home with our bags of peaches I pealed some and we had a taste test to see which we liked better. K had sent some peaches for a snack a few days ago so we used those canned peaches to compare with the two varieties of peaches we picked. (one was a white flesh peach and the other the classic orange color). The kids had to taste the fresh picked peaches the way God Created them.. without sugar! then they could dip them in sugar and then compare them with the canned. Everyone liked the canned the best except for Cat.. she liked the fresh orange colored ones the best. Needless to say it was lots of fun and we had a "peach" of a time.
While we were on our walk Jo found some locust skin shells that were on a mulberry leaf hanging in the tree.. we brought those home and looked in the world book for info and found a great pic on the internet of a locust coming out of its skin :) .. the neat thing is there were TWO on the leaf so we each get to keep one!

After all that we still had book work to do. Cat and K had to alphabetize four lists for their English, all the kids did journal pages.. Kal drew pics of the locusts and Tay put her leaf collection on her page! The kids also organized their 10 gal boxes which I got yesterday for them to store all their school books etc in.. and decorated the outside. For Math we played a dice rolling game, and Jo, Nate, Tay and Kam worked with math blocks in many different ways. For science I read from our book and we pretended to be satellites around each other and the sun.. (that was fun) We also talked about the different planets and how they have a gravitational pull on the Earth.. (lots more in that lesson but too much to write).. We also had some oportunities to work on Good Citizenship.. if you know what I mean :) .. working on taking turns, getting a long and being a team together.. Kam and Nate also played on Jumpstart preschool computer program and By the WAY.. they both WON the dice game we played!

So that was most of the day.. so far.. it has been fun.. and I have even learned a few things.. Like to make sure I watch out for ants too.. not to just tell the kids too :) (I was the only one who stepped in ants today on our walk!)

So I am off to check on my quiet time kids and make sure they are enjoying their quiet time :)
